Dr. Sharma is a board-certified laboratory director and technical lead for Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) and PCR-based assay development and clinical testing at Advanta Genetics. He has led many clinical, research, and commercial initiatives for developing molecular genomics assays and laboratory workflows.
Prior to joining Advanta Genetics, Dr. Sharma served as Head of the Department of Molecular Biology at the National Hansen's Disease (Leprosy) Program (NHDP) under the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) where he established the only NGS clinical laboratory in the United States for providing early diagnosis to leprosy patients. Dr. Sharma's research findings have been published in the New England Journal of Medicine and continue to be used by national agencies (DHH, CDC) to issue recommendations in the field of leprosy.
Dr. Sharma obtained his Ph.D. from Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR) with a research focus on Microbial Genomics and post-doctoral training at LSU. He has authored more than thirty publications and filed 3 patents. He is a clinical laboratory inspector certified by the Collage of American Pathologists and is frequently asked to utilize his molecular genomics expertise to conduct laboratory inspections throughout the Unities States.
